Daniel had a good run in qualifying for tomorrow sprint race putting the Team Lebanon entry on the outside of row two. He scored his best lap in the second session with a 1:31.756. It did not go as well in qualifying for the feature race and Daniel will start from the inside of row eight. We will post a link to the official Team Lebanon release as soon as it is available.
After suffering disappointment in qualifying (see story link below), Daniel was able to fight back to take a top ten result in the feature race earning additional points for Team Lebanon. The weekend started with great promise but technical issues hampered the team in qualifying and Daniel would have to start both races near the back of the field. He would come from 19th in the feature race to finish 6th.
With a lap of 1m 30.816 seconds, Daniel smashed the 10-year-old lap record at the circuit, with a time more than four seconds quicker than the previous best, set in 1998 in a Ferrari 333 SP driven by Mauro Baldi.
"The circuit is getting quicker and quicker as more laps are done and the tyres are getting much more grip," Morad said in the post session press conference.
All the promise shown by A1 Team Lebanon turned to disaster today in Taupo, New Zealand. Daniel Morad had been one of the top performing drivers in each session ahead of the two races, but it turned sour in the Sprint race with a mechanical failure, compounded by retirement from the Feature.
The Lebanon flag flew over Taupo today, not only for a strong qualifying performance by Daniel Morad and A1 Team Lebanon, but also with a group of super-fans, who had travelled from Australia to support the team. Millions of people around the globe will have seen these committed Lebanese supporters waving the nation's national flag today, as the TV cameras captured the essence of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport. However, the team's strong qualifying results could have been even better if Morad hadn't been blocked by the Monaco car in one run and slowed by a spinning China car ahead of him on his final run. Without these two incidents the team and Morad would have been celebrating two top five grid positions.
After a lengthy break in the action, A1GP is back on track this weekend in New Zealand and Daniel is having a great run following the first day of practice. He sat third after the two rookies sessions - leading the first round of practice and would go on to sit second fastest in the first session for designated drivers.
